Kursaal is taking a new step to make the venue future-proof. The Lounge, which over the past 20 years was mainly known in the nightlife scene, has been completely renovated and is reopening after a year and a half to now be used for a wide range of events.

An authentic yet futureproof setting

The renovation was carried out while preserving the original elements designed by architect Léon Stynen in 1952. One of the most intensive interventions was the restoration of the seventy slats that originally served as sunshades. Each piece was carefully dismantled, sanded, repaired, and repainted – a monumental task that restores the original appearance. The ceiling regained its authentic colours, and damages to the original wooden panelling were expertly repaired. After twenty years, the stained-glass windows by artist Jo Maes (°1923) are once again visible to the public. Maes was the only Ostend-based artist Stynen called upon for the Kursaal. The windows have been meticulously restored and fitted with indirect lighting, bringing their rich play of colours back to life. Another remarkable element is the ceramic fireplace corner, designed by the renowned Pierre Caille (1911–1996). His creation, featuring black tiles and playful figurines in playing-card format, has remained almost entirely intact after seventy years. A number of damaged or missing tiles were thoroughly researched and either restored or carefully reconstructed. There is no better place to enjoy the sea view than by this renewed fireplace! The original Lounge plans – in 1952 the “reading room” – are still preserved in the Stynen archive (VAI Antwerp) and inspired contemporary designers to bring his creations back onto the market. The reissued wall lights bear witness to the timeless quality of his designs.

These historical elements have been complemented with a futureproof infrastructure that makes the Lounge suitable for the most diverse range of events. Whether it’s business meetings, plenary sessions, receptions, presentations, or VIP hospitality during concerts, the space can be flexibly arranged to suit the client’s needs. With its LED wall, high-quality sound system, professional lighting, sustainable designer furniture, and elegant fixed bar with full facilities, the Lounge is equipped with everything needed to host an event in a unique and stylish setting.

In terms of capacity, the room offers numerous possibilities for up to 220 guests, depending on the setup.

The Lounge will also provide a stage for intimate, small-scale live performances such as jazz concerts and comedy shows, where visitors can enjoy a cosy atmosphere with a sea view.

First step in a broader vision

"After months of thorough renovation, the Kursaal Lounge is finally back. With respect for heritage and an eye for contemporary needs, we are breathing new life into this unique space. Very soon, we will reopen this beautiful part of the Kursaal to the public – a place where locals and visitors alike can enjoy atmosphere, comfort, and an unforgettable view of the sea,” says Niko Geldhof, Alderman for Tourism and Kursaal – Chairman NV EKO.

With the reopening of the Lounge, Kursaal Oostende is taking the first step in its broader vision of preparing the iconic building for the future. The Lounge is the first hall to be delivered within the renovation project and offers a preview of what is yet to come.

“We are particularly proud to be able to offer this beautiful space to organisers and visitors from now on. The Lounge is immediately available and is a real added value to our offer, while the main concert hall is in full transition towards becoming a state-of-the-art, multifunctional venue. On 29 September we will welcome ‘Netwerk Verpleegkunde’, the first organisation to integrate the Lounge into their five-day congress as a seminar room,” says Gwen Nys, Deputy Director Kursaal Oostende.

The concert hall is currently undergoing a thorough transformation from a classical auditorium into a versatile space that can accommodate both seated and standing events. Thanks to this change, capacity will increase to 3150 people in a standing configuration, giving Kursaal Oostende even more opportunities to host top acts and diverse events.
