Oyster tasting

The start of the oyster cultivation in the Ostend region goes back to the 19th century. After having been caught at sea, oysters and lobsters were kept alive in these seawater ponds until they were sold. These oyster and lobster beds gradually disappeared due to the expansion of the harbour and the extension of the city. The last remaining oyster farm also stopped its activities in the seventies as the oyster cultivation was no longer feasible due to bad water quality. This meant the end of a prosperous oyster culture.

Concept
But in the mid-nineties the former oyster farm was refurbished into a centre for youth accommodation. Thanks to the improved water quality, oysters started growing spontaneously, so it didn’t take long before a new dawn broke for the Oostende oyster cultivation. The combination of stay and oyster cultivation was quickly made and proved to be an attractive formula for those who love to stay at the coast in a unique décor. The aqua culture centre “De Oesterput” is situated at close range from the beach and the dunes and offers a unique scenery on the Spuikom. A biologist will welcome you and give you a professional explanation on the activities of the oyster farm. Obviously, you will be invited to taste a few oysters, among which the famous “Ostendaise”.
